Last week brought news that its director Stefano Sollima will be overseeing the Sicario sequel, Soldado. Today brings some concrete evidence as to why he was picked for the gig in the first place. It's a new trailer for his current project, Rome-set crime thriller Suburra. Watch it below while trying to repeat those film titles quickly 12 times.
Epic in scope and stylish in execution, Suburra is a multi-stranded delve into the dark side of the Eternal City. There’s fixers, mafiosi, escort girls, developers, hit men (and women), drugs and a whole mess of sleaze and seduction. There's opulence and violence, and a synth soundtrack featuring M83. There's guns. Tonnes of guns.
The Vatican casts a compromised shadow over all the corruption, while the police seem to have taken the week off. A planned property deal that promises to transform the Roman shoreline into Las Vegas brings all those forces crashing together.
Sollima, who recently created the successful TV spin-off of Matteo Garrone’s similarly themed Gomorra, may be moving Hollywood-wards, but he's left this movie to get the TV treatment too. Netflix is delivering a ten-part take on Suburra planned for 2017.
Catch the movie itself in the UK from June 24. Sollima and his lead actor Pierfrancesco Favino, meanwhile, will be fronting a Q&A and preview screening in London on June 14.
