Cult status surely awaits The Greasy Strangler, a horror-comedy that's already a firm favourite within Team Empire. Its gonzo charms will be in full effect at next month’s Empire Live event, with director Jim Hosking Q&Aing at the big movie celebration, before unleashing itself on an unsuspecting public in October. With Ben Wheatley and Elijah Wood sharing producer credits, this one is the brainchild of Hosking and his co-writer Toby Harvard. It’s set in LA and follows dad Ronnie (Michael St. Michaels) and his son Brayden (Sky Elobar) and their “disco walking tours” around the city. Dad, though, is a homicidal lunatic with a penchant for covering himself in fat. That’s probably worth mentioning.

“Someone said it’s like Steptoe & Son on a psychedelic substance,” says Hosking in the new issue of Empire, “but there’s loads of stuff in there: LA films from the '70s, old cartoons, David Lynch, dirty amateur porn…"
