The last time we saw Ewan McGregor, he was planning, scheming and killing as the villainous Roman Sionis in Birds Of Prey. For a new film, he won't be seen, but he'll be heard in a much more positive light, as he's voicing Jiminy Cricket in Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio.
Talking with ACE Universe, he revealed some actual details, including the fact that it sounds as though he'll unleash his impressive pipes. "That I had started working on before I left for New York, so some of that is recorded," he says. "And of course it’s stop-frame animation, so it’s going to take them a great long time to make that film. But my first part of that, which is recording his dialogue, is sort of done. There may or may not be a song that needs to be recorded. I’m not sure I’m at liberty to discuss that. Even though we’re just privately talking, you know."
Del Toro has, of course, been aiming to make his take on the classic tale for years, and in 2018, found a home for it at Netflix. His version of the classic tale will be set in Italy during the rise of fascism in the 1930s. It sounds as though it'll channel a similar vibe to Pan's Labyrinth, which also explored totalitarianism through fantasy. Mark Gustafson is serving as co-director, while Patrick McHale is co-writing the script.
