American Pastoral

The UK may not be feeling too pastoral today but the first trailer for Ewan McGregor’s directorial debut should redress that balance. Not that Philip Roth's American Pastoral is exactly a smooth ride. Suburban domestic bliss descends into violence and destruction in post-war America. Take a look below.

The adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel has McGregor in the starring role alongside Dakota Fanning and Jennifer Connelly. They're a seemingly picturebox family, suddenly torn apart by an act of violence involving their radicalised daughter (Fanning).

Set against the backdrop of post-war America, American Pastoral has McGregor’s successful businessman and athlete Seymour ‘Swede’ Levov unravelling as the nation's social upheaval winds a destructive path into his own family. Uzo Aduba, Molly Parker, Rupert Evans and Valorie Curry also star, with The Lincoln Lawyer screenwriter John Romano adapting the book.

An ambitious first project for McGregor, sure. Let's hope it delivers when it arrives in the UK on November 4.
