The television industry is furiously raiding Hollywood’s archives for movies fit to adapt to the small screen. TV reboots of The Departed, Lethal Weapon and Let The Right One In are all currently in development. One movie we didn’t expect to see make the transition? Surreal romantic comedy Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. But yes, it appears to be joining that fold.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Steve Golin, a producer on the original 2004 film, will be shepherding the project to completion, with Zev Borow likely to write the script. It’s still early days for the venture, and it’s yet to be picked up by a network, according to THR.
The original film, a high-concept romantic drama, starred Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as a couple in a doomed relationship who used a futuristic technique to erase memories of each other. Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman, the film’s director and writer, respectively, will not be involved.
Winslet and Carrey are almost certain not to be involved, too. While the film seems a little more cerebral than the usual film-to-TV exports, the concept is intriguing enough that it could translate surprisingly well – there’s plenty to explore, though it will surely miss the sharp avant-garde mind of Kaufman.
Where does Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind sit on our list of the greatest romantic comedies ever?
