Eric Bana's Next Movie Will Be Brilliant

Fresh from training teenage assassins in Hanna, Eric Bana is on the move from spycraft to crime for **Brilliant, a heist thriller in development at Lakeshore Entertainment.

The film involves a small-time crook who gets mixed up with big-time gangsters for a diamond robbery that would normally be way out of his league. We'd surmise that Bana's is the amateur role (which might, if it's appropriate, give him the opportunity to break out the comedy chops that we've not seen for a while) but it's not* quite* clear from Variety's story if that's the case. Unconfirmed reports have Cameron Diaz cast opposite him in an unspecified role. Let's have her as the leader of the professionals eh? None of yer sappy love interest nonsense...

The Brilliant screenplay is by Gillian Gorfil, who was a producer on Blood Diamond: if diamonds aren't quite her best friend, they're at least solid acquaintances. And the director is Robert Luketic: not an obvious choice given a CV that includes Legally Blonde and Monster In Law, but he was also behind the card-sharping drama 21 and the Ashton Kutcher action comedy Killers.

No start date or release info yet, but with casting underway, there should be more to follow shortly...
