Once upon a time in Hollywood, a guy called Quentin Tarantino became an instant auteur – a filmmaker whose unique, ultra cine-literate voice brought us some of the most downright cool movies ever made. From Reservoir Dogs to The Hateful Eight, via Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, and Inglourious Basterds to name but a few, QT has blazed a trail through Tinseltown like few others. This summer he’s back with Once Upon A Time In Hollywood – following a sprawling cast of characters through the final days of the film industry’s Golden Age in 1969.
In the July 2019 issue of Empire, we get the inside story on his latest big screen odyssey – here’s a sneak peek inside.
Once Upon A Time In Hollywood
Every Tarantino film is an event – but his latest is especially intriguing, delving back into the ‘60s of his childhood to revisit the demise of Golden Age Hollywood. Empire goes inside the edit suite with Tarantino to talk the filmmaker’s latest epic – and also talks to mega-stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie to talk all things 1969. It’s the ultimate access to the summer’s coolest film.
Empire 30: Quentin Tarantino
As well as diving deep into Hollywood, this issue celebrates QT for Empire 30 – asking reader questions to the man himself in The People Vs. Quentin Tarantino, and with exclusive tributes from fellow ‘90s indie filmmakers Robert Rodriguez and Kevin Smith.
The Lion King
Disney’s 1994 animation is an undisputed classic – but that hasn’t stopped director Jon Favreau from tweaking the formula for his photo-real remake. Empire talks to the filmmaker about the latest stage in The Lion King’s circle of life.
Ari Aster
When Hereditary launched last year, it knocked audiences heads clean off with its nightmarish grief-laden horror. Now Ari Aster is back with an all-new cult vision in Midsommar – Empire catches up with one of the genre’s new young masters.
The Dead Don’t Die
You don’t necessarily associate indie filmmaker Jim Jarmusch with severed limbs and bloody carnage. But his latest project is a none-more-hip zombie flick, starring Adam Driver, Bill Murray, and Iggy Pop. Get to know the year’s most idiosyncratic, unexpected undead movie.
Jerry Maguire
It’s over 20 years since Tom Cruise had us at hello in one of the greatest romance-cum-sports-industry-drama-cum-character-dramas ever made. Director Cameron Crowe talks his iconic crowd-pleaser with filmmaker and Stranger Things exec producer Shawn Levy.
Agnès Varda
When she died earlier this year, French New Wave pioneer Agnès Varda left behind an astonishing legacy – and it’s about to come full circle with her final piece, Varda by Agnès. Empire celebrates her incredible work with the help of her frequent filmmaking collaborators.
