Two decades deep into the 21st Century, the new issue of Empire takes a look at the most beloved films to have arrived since the year 2000 – counting down a list of the 100 greatest movies, from blistering blockbusters to incredible indies. This month’s magazine comes with six collectible covers, each illustrated exclusively for Empire by Paul Shipper and bearing icons from classic 21st Century movies. Take a look at them all here, and read on for a run-down of what can be found in the new issue – on sale from Thursday 23 January.
The 100 Greatest Movies Of The Century
The past 20 years have been transformative for cinema – so Empire compiled a definitive list of the ultimate 21st Century movies, combining votes from critics and readers. Inside the magazine you’ll find 32 pages dedicated to the 100 movies – featuring critic essays, your reader reviews, and a stack of brand new filmmaker interviews and photo shoots.
We have Edgar Wright talking Baby Driver, Paul Feig on his brilliant Bridesmaids, Greta Gerwig on the legacy of Lady Bird, Paul King eating marmalade sandwiches and unpacking Paddington 2, Lee Unkrich (and Lots-o’-Huggin’ Bear) talking Toy Story 3, Gareth Evans on The Raid’s most oof-worthy moments, Peter Ramsey on the reality-shattering Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse.
Not only that, but – SPOILER WARNING – to celebrate Mad Max: Fury Road topping the list, we went down under with director George Miller to talk the making of his motoring masterpiece, the casting of Tom Hardy, the mind-blowing stunts, and its fearsome feminist hero, Imperator Furiosa.
The Invisible Man
The ‘Dark Universe’ died before it truly began – prompting Upgrade director Leigh Whannell to present a radical new take on the classic Universal Monster. The filmmaker and his star, Elisabeth Moss, talk the transparent metaphor around gaslighting and abuse in a different type of monster movie.
Emily Beecham
British actor Emily Beecham has had a rapid rise – earning Best Actress at Cannes for indie sci-fi Little Joe, and with a packed schedule of tantalising projects on the way. Empire sits down with one of the UK’s most exciting new talents.
