From The Office US to The Mindy Project, Mindy Kaling has always displayed a smart and funny comedic voice both in front of and behind the camera. Now she’s moving into feature film territory as the writer and star of comedy-drama Late Night, set in the world of American talk show hosts. Its The Devil Wears Prada-meets-30 Rock premise casts Kaling as Molly Patel, a new writer joining the entirely white-male writing staff of the late-night talk show hosted by Emma Thompson’s legendary, somewhat fearsome Katherine Newbury. Watch the pair team up to revive the show in the first trailer.
Kaling’s warm and witty persona and Thompson’s gleeful prickliness look like a perfect match in this one. The film is directed by Nisha Ganatra, who previously helmed episodes of Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Transparent, and Dear White People, as well as an episode of The Mindy Project.
Late Night will arrive in UK cinemas on 7 June – a week before Thompson will also appear in the rebooted Men In Black: International. A good summer, then, for any fans of the iconic actor – which, let’s face it, is everyone.
