Continuing a relationship with Sony/TriStar and producer Matt Tolmach that's already resulted in Superbad, Zombieland and two adventures for The Amazing Spider-Man, Emma Stone has now signed up for Love May Fail. The film is based on the novel by Silver Linings Playbook author Matthew Quick.

Mike White (Year Of the Dog, School Of Rock) has written the screenplay, adapting Quick's dark comedy drama. The story involves one Portia Kane (presumably Stone's character) leaving her affluent Florida life to return home to her odd mother and former small-town life, after she discovers her porn-director husband cheating on her.

Back home she gets involved in restoring the reputation of her beloved high school English teacher Nate Vernon, who has been forced into early retirement (with his one-eyed dog Albert Camus) following a violent incident with a pupil. Various colourful characters she's met along the journey help her in her cause.

No director is yet attached, and nobody has yet been announced for the plum, show-off, scene-stealing role of Vernon. Expect some competition for that one. Producing along with Tolmach are Elizabeth Cantillon (Concussion, Goosebumps) and TriStar president Hannah Minghella.

There are no start or release dates so far, but Quick's novel is published in the UK by Picador, should you want to get up to speed.
