While it looked at one point that Warner Bros.' already awesome-sounding The Gangster Squad might boast one of the most testosteroney* casts since The Expendables, it now appears that director Ruben Fleischer is aiming to inject a serious dose of oestrogen into the proceedings, by reaching out to his Zombieland star Emma Stone.
According to Variety, Stone is up for the role of Jean, a sharp-tongued gal who catches the eye of not only squad leader Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling, who she already has cinematic romantic experience with thanks to the upcoming comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love) but also mobster/gambler Mickey Cohen. Love triangle ahoy!
Gangster Squad also features the likes of Josh Brolin, Giovanni Ribisi, Anthony Mackey and Michael Pena and will follow the exploits of the titular LAPD team, recruited as an attempt to keep corruption out of mobster investigations as a tidal wave of gang types from the East Coast begins to sweep over Los Angeles in the 1940s and ‘50s.
With shooting (both types) set to start in September, the movie should be with us next year.
*Which, if Friends taught us anything, is the real San Francisco treat.
