Though we were thinking we'd get our first look at The Crown's version of Lady Diana Spencer – the future Princess Of Wales – in the show's third series, it would appear that plans to introduce her have moved back to the fourth instead. We do at least know who will be playing her, as newcomer Emma Corrin has won the role.
Corrin has just a few screen roles on her CV to date, including in Grantchester and upcoming Batman-adjacent series Pennyworth. Nabbing the chance to play Diana represents a big break, even if the controversial real-life woman will be a challenge for both the show and the actress. "Beyond excited and honoured to be joining The Crown for its fourth season," Corrin tells The Hollywood Reporter. "I have been glued to the show since the first episode and to think I’m now joining this incredibly talented acting family is just surreal. Princess Diana was an icon, and her effect on the world remains profound and inspiring. To be given the chance to explore her through Peter Morgan’s writing is the most exceptional opportunity, and I will strive to do her justice!"
"Emma is a brilliant talent who immediately captivated us when she came in for the part of Diana Spencer," says series creator Peter Morgan. "As well as having the innocence and beauty of a young Diana, she also has, in abundance, the range and complexity to portray an extraordinary woman who went from anonymous teenager to becoming the most iconic woman of her generation."
There's still no official word on when Series 3, which sees Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies and Helena Bonham Carter taking over the main roles, Gillian Anderson playing Margaret Thatcher and Emerald Fennell as Camilla Shand, AKA the future Camilla Parker Bowles, will hit Netflix, but it should be later in 2019, with Series 4 to shoot this year.
As for Corrin, she'll make her cinematic debut in Miss World protest pic Misbehaviour, which has yet to confirm a release date.
