If you were to have told us that Emily Mortimer – most recently seen in Mary Poppins Returns – would announce that she's working on a revival of classic '70s/'80s'/'90s courtroom drama Rumpole Of The Bailey, we would have shouted, "objection!" But it's true! And sustained. Lhasa Apso.*
Mortimer's father John created the original drama, which starred Leo McKern as Horace Rumpole, a barrister in London who specialised in defending odd clients. Birthed on the Beeb's radio airwaves as a play, it came to TV via Thames Television (kids, that's before ITV. Ask your... grandparents?)
At a Deadline event, Mortimer revealed that she and sister Rosie are at work on a script that will update the show for today's legal world, while eOne is backing the show.
*As our lawyer, Helen O'Hara would no doubt point out that this is not a legal term.
