Joseph McCarthy is one of the most notorious politicians in US history – he's popped up in both factual films and shows and as fictional character too. Now he'll be the focus of a biopic, with Michael Shannon on to star as McCarthy alongside Emilia Clarke and Dane DeHaan.
The film – simply known right now as McCarthy, has The Painted Bird's Václav Marhoul in the director's chair, with a script by The Hitman's Bodyguard's Tom O'Connor. This one promises to be both less harrowing than Bird or as waxcky as Bodyguard.
Scoot McNairy is also on board for the film, which charts the rise and fall of notorious and powerful senator and his enablers, a group that includes his politically ambitious wife Jean Kerr (Clarke), his ruthless young lawyer Roy Cohn (DeHaan) and his trusted friend and colleague Ray Kiermas (McNairy). McCarthy was a demagogue who used show-trials and red-baiting to rise to power on a wave of anti-communist hysteria.
We'll have to wait for this one, as it's not set to shoot until next autumn in Prague and the States.
