It’s been a while since we’ve heard much about Sean Gullette, who co-wrote and starred in Pi, the film that launched Darren Aronofsky’s career. But now he’s back with a vengeance, with Aronofsky producing his directorial debut, Tangier, and lining up a cast that includes Emile Hirsch, Kristen Scott Thomas, Tony Shalhoub and Jeremy Irons.
As reported by The Playlist Nation, Tangier (the site lists Tangiers, though the film’s foreign sales company Inferno hasTangier, so we’re going with that for now) will star Hirsch as a soldier who jumps ship in the Moroccan city and lands a job protecting a rich socialite (Thomas) whose husband (Irons) seems to be wrapped up in some frightening espionage conspiracy.
Given that Gullette has made the city his home, it should be filled with spot-on use of the place. And we’re excited to see the writer/actor make the move into directing, since his career, while still bubbling along in primarily smaller projects, hasn’t led to a whole lot of well-known work since his monochrome maths whizz back in 1998.
What we don’t know, however, is when he’ll actually get to crank his cameras as, despite having his old filmmaking mucker’s backing and a solid cast on board, the film is still being sold at Cannes, so chances are it doesn’t yet have a locked in date.
