We’ll be straight-up about this one: this is a story where we don’t have much in the way of concrete details to report on right now. But if you caught Promising Young Woman last year, you’ll know that any update on what’s coming next from Emerald Fennell, its Oscar-winning writer and director, is news (or, almost-news) worth getting very excited about. And so here it is, a blast of pure excitement and little specificity, with reports that Fennell is readying her next film, expected to go into production later this year.

According to Variety, Fennell’s upcoming project – on which she’ll be writer, director and producer, just as on Promising Young Woman – is going to be "a story of obsession", and will get cameras rolling this summer. It’s being kept top-secret for now, so little else is known about who’ll star or what exactly it’ll be about, but it’s already shot to the top of our ‘must-see films of 2023, or maybe 2024 depending on how everything goes’ list.

Following the release of Promising Young Woman, Fennell has been plenty busy – not only touring the awards circuit, but readying the release of her Cinderella musical (written alongside Andrew Lloyd Webber and playing in London’s West End now), and writing DC Comics’ Zatanna film for Warner Bros. On top of all that, it sounds like this next directorial feature will be an outright original Fennell ‘joint’. Bring it on.
