He may be one of Hollywood's favourite authors, but Elmore Leonard is less than impressed by Tinseltown's efforts to adapt his movies for the big screen. In an interview with The San Francisco Chronicle this week, the writer explains the problem: 'when the screenwriter is hired, he has to come up with changes, on principle. That's the way it works, and because of that I've quit writing screenplays. You just have to please too many people. With a book, I entertain myself and that's it.' That said, the writer is still one of the film world's hottest properties with a vast number of A-listers currently involved in making films of Leonard's books, including the writer's favourite director: Quentin Tarantino, who's optioned the rights to Killshot. 'Quentin Tarantino understands me better than anybody,' enthused Leonard, whose favourite film of his work was the director's 1997 movie, Jackie Brown. Other big name adaptations include John Malkovich whose production company is adapting Freaky Deaky. Joel and Ethan Cohen who are adapting La Brava, Kathy Bates who wants to adapt Pagan Babies and last, but by no means lease, Catherine Zeta-Jones who's planning on starring in Cuba Libre.
