Reader, they cast her. Ellen Page, star of Juno and last year's break-out leading lady, has been cast in a new adaptation of Jane Eyre, the classic novel by Charlotte Bronte.
The last adaptation of the story was in 1996, and starred Charlotte Gainsbourg as the mousy governess who arrives at a stately home to take up a new job, only to discover strange goings on with her employer, the surly Mr Rochester (yet to be cast). It's a sort of Gothic romance, which means that there are declarations of love, but lots more creeping around dark corridors with gas lamps and jumping as doors slam.
There's no director attached yet, but BBC Films are working on it and Moira Buffini has written the new screenplay. It's hoped that shooting will start in the autumn, so expect a generation of English teachers to add another video to their collections sometime late next year.
