The ending of Breaking Bad had perhaps one glimmer of hope. (Spoilers ahead, obviously). In a climactic season that saw numerous bad things happen to numerous good people as Heisenberg’s drug empire toppled, Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman spent the majority of the final episodes suffering at the hands of a group of neo-Nazis. Thankfully he was rescued in the finale by Bryan Cranston's Walter White, who died in the process, and the surviving meth cooker screamed off into the distance – free at last, if significantly scarred both psychologically and physically.
Now we’re soon to find out exactly what happened to Jesse next, thanks to the arrival of El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie – a follow-up film written and directed by series creator Vince Gilligan. But if you hoped that things would largely be OK for Pinkman after escaping his ordeal, think again.
In the full trailer for the movie, we see Pinkman immediately following his escape, hooking back up with old pals Skinny Pete and Badger. But he’s still a wanted man, still a total wreck after everything he’s been through, and the trailer has a muted and reflective tone. While everything is being kept fairly cryptic, there are a few interesting points to ponder. Points like, who’s that bald bloke at the 57 second mark? And whose gravelly voice asks ‘You ready?’ off-camera in the closing seconds?
We’ll know all when El Camino arrives on Netflix on 11 October.
