Mining scandal project Gold has bounced from Michael Mann’s hands, through Spike Lee’s and ended up in Stephen Gaghan’s lap earlier this year. With Matthew McConaughey aboard to star, Gaghan is lining up the rest of the cast, which will now include Edgar Ramirez.
The film, which has a script from Patrick Massett and John Zinman, tells the story of the 1993 Bre-X Corporation mining scandal. The plot follows a rough-around-the-edges prospector Walsh (McConaughey) who stumbles upon one of the largest gold mines in the world in the Indonesian jungle. Which, you may not be surprised to learn given the word “scandal” before, turned out to be bogus. Ramirez is set as geologist Michael Acosta in the true-life tale.
Despite the troubled development on this one, Gaghan appears to be finally getting it off the ground and will start shooting in June in Thailand, New York and New Mexico.
Ramirez, who last appeared in Deliver Us From Evil, will be seen in boxing biopic Hands Of Stone, action remake Point Break (taking over the iconic Bodhi role, the brave fella) and David O. Russell’s latest, Joy, alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Virginia Madsen.
