It’s been nine years since Aaron Eckhart and spiky writer/director Neil LaBute last collaborated properly on a film, and even longer than that since their blistering joint breakthrough In the Company of Men. Now the pair is reuniting for The Geography of Hope.
The new film, which is set in the 1970s, finds two criminals in the midst of robbing a San Diego convenience store when something goes horribly wrong. The pair flee to Mexico and try to hide out while also romancing several American women. But they’re torn between fleecing their romantic partners and staying loyal.
LaBute has also recruited Ed Harris – who he worked with on one-man stage drama Wrecks – to play the other crook, and is finally getting the chance to dig the script out of storage, as it was written long before most of his other movies and plays.
He’s looking to get the movie made some time this year, heading to Puerto Rico to shoot, as it has the right buildings to stand in for 1970s Mexico. Given the three main names attached, this should hopefully make us forget that LaBute ever filmed that disastrous Wicker Man remake. Wait… no, a bee just flew past and we thought about it. Curses!
