In 2015, we got the first reports of Dwayne Johnson and his team developing a Big Trouble In Little China film for Fox that was, back then, being called a remake of the 1986 movie. Naturally, the response was not great, but according to producer Hiram Garcia (president of Johnson's Seven Bucks company), it's not aiming for that, but to continue the story.

“There’s a lot of things going on with Big Trouble In Little China," Garcia tells Collider. "We are in the process of developing that, and let me tell you, the idea is not to actually remake Big Trouble In Little China. You can’t remake a classic like that, so what we’re planning to do is we’re going to continue the story. We’re going to continue the universe of the film. Everything that happened in the original exists and is standalone and I think there’s only one person that could ever play Jack Burton, so Dwayne would never try and play that character. So we are just having a lot of fun. We’re actually in a really great space with the story that we’ve cracked. But yeah, no remake. It is a continuation, and we are deep into development on that as well, and I think you’ll start hearing some things about that probably soon."

Given Johnson's packed schedule, we'll probably be waiting a while for this one, which gives all involved more time to work on it. But it's hopeful at least to know that the legacy of Kurt Russell and John Carpenter's original will be respected, even if it's more cult classic than bona fide great movie (still a hell of a lot of fun.)

The Artist Formerly Known As The Rock will next be seen in Jungle Cruise (out in the States on 11 October next year, and probably docking around the same time here) for Disney and will next shoot Fast & Furious franchise spin-off Hobbs And Shaw, which will actually debut first, on 26 July next year.
