With Inception's promotional tour finished and Batman 3 slowly kicking into gear, it appears that Chris Nolan, producing partner/other half Emma Thomas and the rest of the Man of Steel team are getting down to the serious business of finding a director to bring Superman back to the screen once more. Already on the list of directors they’ve talked to? Such names as Duncan Jones, Tony Scott, Matt Reeves and Zach Snyder.
It should come as no real shock that with Nolan involved and the prestige of the character, a wealth of top directors are taking meetings about the idea. While Deadline’s report mentions a short list, we’re pretty sure half of the people who have wielded megaphones on decent films in the recent past will be badgering their agents to get a chat with Nolan and co.
But the names thrown up so far are certainly eclectic. Given the job he did on Moon (and the fact he’s made the leap to an even more effects-heavy piece with** Source Code**), we’re certain Duncan Jones isn’t hurting for job offers. Tony Scott might have a reputation as a style-over-substance man these days, but he’s still a big name. Matt Reeves wrangled Cloverfield and is currently drawing plenty of positive buzz for vampire remake Let Me In, while Zach Snyder is someone that Warners clearly likes working with, and who has made them plenty of money in the past with 300.
All that has apparently happened so far is a series of discussions, and several of the candidates (including Battle: Los Angeles director Jonathan Liebsman, who Warner Bros. plucked to direct its **Clash of the Titans **sequel) have lots of other projects on their plate. Nolan and his team are going to put their choice to Warners and Legendary Pictures in a few weeks, so it looks like we’ll known soon enough who’ll bring David Goyer’s script to the screen in the next couple of years…
