UPDATE: Jones has officially confirmed he's making the Trooper movie, via a tweet that also includes a link to where you can get more information on the film as work progresses.
From Moon and Mute to Warcraft and Source Code, Duncan Jones has brought his talents to small-scale character pieces and bigger, geekier studio projects alike. And for his next film, Jones looks set to work on something halfway between the two, taking on a comic book movie – but not one featuring brightly-colored spandex. Rather than a massive Marvel or DC adaptation he’s keeping it British and playing around in 2000AD’s Megaverse – and all signs are pointing to Rogue Trooper.
The director posted a teaser video on his Twitter account, showing himself pondering his next project. “Dredd was great, but no sequel – pity,” Jones mulls in voiceover, before removing his hat to reveal a bright blue mohawk in reference to Rogue Trooper. The character is a blue-skinned, mohawked super soldier fighting on Nu-Earth in a war between the Norts and Southers. It’s unknown which storyline Jones could adapt, or even if he’ll invent his own plot for the film, but the original Rogue Trooper story saw the GI tracking down the Traitor General, a Souther who turned on his own troop and killed them all leaving Rogue as the only survivor.
There’s nothing officially confirmed right now, and no date or star yet – but the prospect of Jones working on a dark, violent and very British comic book movie is certainly an exciting one.
