If Sin City: A Dame To Kill For was an object lesson in the dangers of bringing out a sequel years after the original, age doesn’t seem to have wearied the need for Harry Dunne and Lloyd Christmas. The idiots returned two decades after their original misadventures and America seemed quite happy to have them back, if the studio estimated $38 million opening weekend for Dumb And Dumber To is anything to go by.

Though the sequel will have to go some to match the original’s successful run, it’s a solid start for directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly, who have weathered years of speculation and frustrated attempts to make this happen. And at least it means we can now all put **Dumb & Dumberer **out of our collective noggins as the “other” Dumb film.

Disney’s **Big Hero 6 **couldn’t quite overcome the new challenger, though it made a respectable $36 million in its second weekend, flying past the $100 million mark for a $11.6 million US total so far. It may not be the breakout monster that Frozen proved to be, but audiences love Baymax and he’ll be keeping the toy department happy for a while. Also dropping one place was Christopher Nolan’s big sci-fi effort Interstellar, which slipped 38% and took in $29.1 million. It hasn’t quite made it past the event horizon of $100 million in the US yet, but thanks to an international release, has already soared to $321.9 million.

Music industry drama Beyond The Lights landed fourth on its initial weekend in the charts, earning $6.5 million, while **Gone Girl **slipped to fifth, taking in $4.6 million.

Indie comedy St. Vincent stayed in place at sixth, making $4 million, while tank thriller Fury fell to seventh with $3.8 million. Nightcrawler slipped one place to eighth, earning $3.03 million, with Ouija down from fourth to ninth with $3.02 million. And Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Birdman squawked into the top 10 as it added screens, boosting its nest egg by $2.4 million to $11.5 million in the US so far.
