Playing a fake family in a new comedy

Good to see that David Duchovny is getting back on track after his recent travails.

The actor has signed on to star in a comedy drama called The Joneses. And we like the sound of this one. A lot.

Duchovny and Demi Moore will star as an upwardly mobile family – The Joneses, naturally – who move into a suburban neighbourhood and immediately become the toast of the town, praised for their good looks and coveted possessions.

But – and here’s the bit we like – it turns out that they’re fakes, actors employed by a large corporation as a product placement experiment, the idea being that their neighbours will fall over themselves to buy luxury products in order to keep up with the Joneses.

Duchovny’s ‘dad’ is actually undergoing a crisis of conscience over living a lie. Moore’s ‘mom’ is a career-driven woman who begins to manifest genuine feelings toward her ‘husband’. And Amber Heard’s ‘daughter’ wants to put the moves on ‘Dad’.

And the stage is set for a comedy studded with piercing social commentary. We have to say, we really like the premise – it’s fresh, unusual and could be rich with pointed satire. Oh, and we like the cast – Gary Cole’s in it, too, which is always a boon.

Derrick Borte will direct, from his own script, with a mid-October start date pencilled in. The film will shoot in Atlanta, Georgia.
