It’s been a long time coming (which, frankly, has us worried), but the first proper trailer for Dredd, featuring Karl Urban as the world’s gruffest lawman, has finally arrived and you can have a peek below.
Dredd, for anyone unfamiliar with 2000AD’s most famous creation (sorry, Strontium Dog), finds the future Earth a ruined, apocalyptic wasteland. Humanity survives in towering, crowded Mega Cities. One such place – spanning the area between Washington and Boston – is Mega City One, loaded with violence, crime, drugs and death.
The only people who can keep order in a place like this are the Judges, highly trained and extremely dangerous cops who serve as judge, jury and executioner when needed. And the toughest of them all is Judge Dredd (Urban).
But when he’s tasked with training and evaluating new recruit Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a seemingly routine day turns into a nightmare when they answer a call to investigate the high rise slum ruled with an iron fist by drug maven Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) it’s not going to be an easy place to take down, since she has a throng of thugs ready to stand in their way.
This one certainly looks like it’ll be better than the Sly Stallone effort, though it’s tough to judge (har har) from one trailer. It’s unfortunate that it seems to feature a similar plot to sensational action pic The Raid, but hopefully there's enough of the Dredd feel that it’ll stand on its own. And Urban certainly has the grouchy tone to a tee…
Dredd arrives on September 7.
