Ever since Downton Abbey closed its doors on Christmas Day in 2015, it’s been expected that they could re-open on the big screen. Well, it’s a rumour no more – the ITV drama is officially making a cinematic leap, and production starts very shortly.

A post on the official Downton Twitter page confirmed the news, as well as revealing that the shoot will take place as quickly as this summer. “Welcome back to Downton! We’re thrilled to announce that #DowntonAbbey is coming to the big screen. Film production begins this summer,” the Tweet reads. By the looks of Hugh Bonneville’s social media account, the film is set for release next year, with the actor simply tweeting: “2019 #DowntonAbbey”.

The series’ cast is expected to return, including the likes of Bonneville, Michelle Dockery, Joanna Froggatt and Maggie Smith. The script has been written by series creator Julian Fellowes, and Brian Percival, who directed the Downton pilot, will be behind the camera. The film is being distributed by Focus Features and Universal.
