Not a man to hang around a project while the various swirls and currents of development limbo churn on – or when there is something else he can focus on – Doug Liman has left another movie. The director has parted ways with Warner Bros.' planned Justice League Dark film that would have united characters such as John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Zatanna and others.

The film, which Liman actually departed Gambit to work on last year, was originally under the purview of Guillermo del Toro, and would see the darker Justice League team on a mission in a more supernatural realm than the likes of Bats and Supes.

According to Variety, Liman is off the film because he's concentrating on the adaptation of Patrick Ness' Chaos Walking, which has Tom Holland and Daisy Ridley attached to star and will kick off production this year.

So where does this leave the film also known as Dark Universe? Well, the title will probably stay as Justice League Dark since Universal swooped in and called its monster universe by the former title. But Warners is going full speed on the darker team, with Michael Gilio the latest writer to tackle a script draft and the studio in discussions with other directors to jump aboard. And Constantine and co. have at least hit the screen via their animated Justice League Dark movie.

As for Liman, he has the Tom Cruise drama American Made due in UK cinemas on 25 August.
