The last time Sony made a movie about espionage and double crosses called The Tourist, it ended up a damp squib despite the presence of Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. So though the studio is now planning to adapt Olen Steinhauer’s similarly named novel, we’d predict a title change before it gets anywhere near the screen. Still, the company is pushing ahead with the idea, hiring Doug Liman to develop and possibly direct it.

Steinhauer’s book is the first in a series, with Nearest Exit and American Spy also following protagonist Milo Weaver, a burned-out spy who is looking forward to a little happiness after years spent battling mobsters, terrorists and other global criminals. But then an investigation into the death of a hired killer he’d been tracking makes life tough for him once again.

Matt Corman and Chris Ord, who know a thing or two about spies given their regular gig running US CIA drama Covert Affairs, have been hired to adapt the book series for Liman to oversee. They’ll have time, as he’s currently busy shooting sci-fi pic All You Need Is Kill with Tom Cruise.
