Remember back in July, when we wrote about the new Dream House trailer, and bemoaned the fact that it seemed to give away big plot twists? That was nothing. Compared to this first promo for Richard Gere/Topher Grace thriller The Double, the Dream House footage was a complicated, JJ Abrams-style web of secrecy. Because unless this is a calculated bluff, we now have something that seems to spoil every last reveal. Take a look at the trailer over at Apple if you dare.
It goes without saying that what unspools needs a honking great SPOILER WARNING slapped on the front, probably before the music starts up. The Double finds Gere as retired CIA operative Paul Shepherdson, who is dragged back into action when the Russian assassin he thought he killed appears to crop back up again and start murderalising people.
Gere is paired with Grace as driven young FBI agent Ben Geary, who has familiarised himself with the killer – codenamed Cassius – to such a degree that he’s the current expert on the man and his plans. The reluctant pair, pushed together by Shepherdson’s former supervisor Tom Highland (Martin Sheen) start to investigate the truth, but that leads to a shocking revelation about Cassius’ identity, one which we won’t give away here but chances are you’ll know if you watch the trailer. Don’t say you weren’t warned.
Michael Brandt directed this one, based on a script he co-wrote with regular collaborator Derek Haas. It’s out on September 23 across the pond, but there appears to be no set release date for the UK just yet.
