A superhero team of oddly powered people being led by a bloke in a wheelchair? If your thought was, “why, that’s the X-Men,” pour yourself a hearty glass of wrong.

This time we’re talking DC’s Doom Patrol, which Warner Brothers will be adapting in the hopes of launching a new franchise.

First created in 1963 by Bob Haney, Arnold Drake and Bruno Premiani, the Doom Patrol didn’t exactly hit the X-heights. In fact, so limited was their appeal that the comic closed in 1968. But DC didn’t give up hope, re-launching the series several times and turning the tone darker to attract fans.

So who can we expect to meet when the Patrol eventually hit the screen? The characters include Elasti-Girl, Negative Man (we’re guessing that’s a special power and not just someone who moans a lot) and Robotman.

With Akiva Goldsman overseeing, Adam Taylor has been hired to write the script. “These are some of the most original, offbeat comic book characters we have ever come across, and Adam Turner's unique sensibility makes him a perfect fit for the material," Goldsman told Variety.
