Before he takes to the big screen as Simba in Disney's new The Lion King this summer, there's another Donald Glover film project arriving for your viewing pleasure. The astonishingly talented multi-hyphenate (actor-writer-rapper, to name but a few) has a surprise film dropping on Amazon Prime this coming weekend, the tropically-titled Guava Island. It will launch on the streaming service on Saturday 13 April, shortly before he headlines Coachella festival as Childish Gambino.

Guava Island – Donald Glover

The film doesn’t have an official synopsis, but was shot in Cuba and is directed by Hiro Murai – a frequent filmmaker on Glover’s TV series Atlanta, and the man behind that incredible ‘This Is America’ music video{ =nofollow}. “Guava Island is the end result of four incredible weeks spent in Cuba with some of the most inspiring creative talents I’ve ever met,” Murai said. “Designers, performers, musicians, and filmmakers came together from all over the world to create this crazy fever dream of a production.” Glover calls the film “timely and timeless”, claiming it’s “one of my favourite projects I’ve ever worked on”.

Starring alongside Glover, who takes the lead role, are the likes of Rihanna, Black Panther’s Letitia Wright, and Cinderella’s Nonso Anozie – a cast sure to have cooked up something more than worth making time for this weekend. UK viewers can watch the film from 8am on Saturday morning – bring your own guava juice.
