Big news today from the Star Wars universe, as Disney announced release dates for three new movies set in that galaxy far, far away. With The Rise Of Skywalker arriving this year, we won't see another film from the franchise until December 2022.
That's in line with Disney and Lucasfilm looking to take a breather with the films after Skywalker, and focusing on the small screen expansion of the stories with the Disney+ streaming service shows The Mandalorian and the Rogue One prequel featuring Diego Luna's Cassian Andor.
What we don't yet know is which of the in-development trilogies will be arriving in 2022, 2024 and 2026. The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson has been at work on a brand new story that will be set elsewhere in the Star Wars universe, while Game Of Thrones duo David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are also figuring out a Skywalker-free trilogy.
The announcement comes as Disney is also shaking up the dates for a wide swathe of Fox movies now that it owns the studio. Among them? Word that we'll have to wait even longer for the Avatar sequels. More on that right here.
