As film fans, we at Empire prefer to hope that all films can be good until proven otherwise. We have a very hard time using that rule with Disaster Movie, the latest 'spoof' from Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, the trailer for which you can see here.
It doesn't make us laugh, it just makes us angry. That's not funny and it's definitely not spoof or satire. If you're going to call yourself Disaster Movie, why not play on the tropes of disaster movies? There are a lot of them. Hancock and Enchanted are not disaster movies, and you've also made jokes – and we use that term incredibly loosely – that don't so much mock those films as simply copy them, but with louder sound effects and more falling over. You're not puncturing anything, just pointing at things someone else has done and pulling a funny face. You, Misters Friedberg and Seltzer, bring shame on the term spoof. Go and watch Airplane or Top Secret and see how it's done. Oh great, now our ears are bleeding.
