We were understandably delighted back in November when Michelle MacLaren – a director who has delivered excellent episodes of Breaking Bad, Game Of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Better Call Saul and more – was hired by Warner Bros. to tackle Wonder Woman. You can understand our disappointment, then, when The Hollywood Reporter brings word that she’s no longer making the movie{ =nofollow}.

As usual when this kind of news breaks, the studio has circled the wagons, releasing only a standard statement: “Given creative differences, Warner Bros. and Michelle MacLaren have decided not to move forward with plans to develop and direct Wonder Woman together.”

The stand-alone film, which is still in development and taking aim at a 2017 release date, will star Gal Gadot and, given his casting as Steve Trevor, a love interest of hers from the comics in Suicide Squad, looked destined to potentially also feature Scott Eastwood. MacLaren was also working on the story alongside Jason Fuchs.

Warners will now have to scramble to find a replacement, a similar situation to when Patty Jenkins was signed to direct Thor: The Dark World, but dropped out over disagreements on the vision for the film, with Alan Taylor (one of MacLaren’s fellow Game Of Thrones directors) taking over.
