Sacha Baron Cohen has long been attached to a remake of French hit comedy Le Diner de cons. But it’s been mouldering away in the development kitchen for ages.

Now, with Borat proving to be a smash, Cohen’s power is rising and DreamWorks has moved Dinner With Schmucks to a healthier position on the schedule.

The company has hired the writers who, until recently, had been working on Used Guys – David Guion and Michael Handelman to re-write the script. The story sees a dinner party where the host invites the most pathetic people he can find to amuse the other guests. Cohen would play a man so completely without merit that he drags everyone else down.

Still, there’s no word on when it might get moving – especially as Cohen has a role in Sweeney Todd to shoot and the Bruno film to consider.
