It’s been a while since we heard anything about Lionsgate’s plan to turn Heidi Murkoff’s baby bestseller What to Expect When You’re Expecting into a romantic comedy. And no matter how some of us might have wished they’d just forgotten about it, the project has now entered the next stage of development pregnancy, latching on to Cameron Diaz as a possible star.
Though the original pitch, turned into early drafts by then-expectant screenwriter Heather Hach, focused on seven couples and their issues as they got ready to become parents, the current version has been pared down to a more manageable four sets of nervous parents-to-be by **Whip It’**s Shauna Cross.
And while the creative team so far has strictly been of the double-X chromosome variety, Waking Ned Devine/Nanny McPhee director Kirk Jones was brought on board in March to start gearing up pre-production.
There’s no word on exactly who Diaz will play in the film, but we’re guessing she might want to start stuffing pillows up her shirt to practice should she lock in a deal to star. There’s also the chance of sequels if the first film births decent box office – Murkoff has popped out What To Expect Before You're Expecting, What To Expect: The First Year and What To Expect: The Toddler Years in the decades since the original book arrived in 1984.
