M Night Shyamalan’s own writing/directing career is not exactly keeping the critics across the pond pleased (though The Last Airbender has made decent money at the box office), so he’ll no doubt be hoping for a better reaction to **Devil, the first movie to clatter off the production line of his Night Chronicles label, with the first trailer now arriving online.
Sprung from a Shyamalan story idea, written up by 30 Days of Night scribe Brian Nelson and co-directed by the Quarantine team of Drew and John Erick Dowdle, Devil finds a group of people taking a seemingly ordinary lift ride in a faceless corporate building.
But then strange things start to happen – the lift car stops unexpectedly, the lights flicker and soon they discover that one of them might just be more than they seem. And given the title, we think you can figure out what that means…
With the intriguing tag line “Bad things happen for a reason”, it would appear to be a nifty little low-budget horror that digs up some of the hallmarks of the genre. You can find the footage over at Apple, but we’ll have to wait until September 17 to find out if it’s truly effective.
