It’s been a while since we heard much about the planned American remake of Oscar-nabbing Argentinean crime thriller The Secret in Their Eyes. But now things appear to be moving forward, albeit slowly, with the team at Twitch reporting that Denzel Washington has been offered the lead.
Eyes, which won its golden baldie for Best Foreign Language Film in 2010, was directed by Juan Jose Campanella (who has been given a producer credit on the new version) and starred Ricardo Darin as a retired legal eagle writing a novel in the hopes of getting some closure on one of his big unresolved murder cases. He also must deal with the unreciprocated love he harbours for his female boss. Naturally, reopening old wounds proves painful for everyone.
The last time the new take on the film pinged the radar, it was with Warner Bros. negotiating to buy the rights and handing the writing/directing job to Breach’s Billy Ray. It would appear that Ray is still involved and now he wants Washington to take on the role Darin played in the original.
There’s still no word on how (or even if) the filmmaker plans to find an American equivalent to the military junta and strict class system portrayed in the movie, though chances are he’ll focus more on the emotional and legal angles.
Washington has Robert Zemeckis’ big live-action return Flight on his schedule next, and until there’s official confirmation, word of him starring in Eyes remains a rumour.
