Patrick Dempsey, Grey's Anatomy's Dr McDreamy (but also, alas, McMarried) is to star in new rom-com **Made of Honor **(which we suspect might be retitled Made Of Honour in this country, but we're going with the American spelling for now) and director Paul Weiland is lined up to take the reins.
The film sees Dempsey's character in love with his friend, a woman who's engaged to someone else. When she asks him to be her maid of honour (apparently misunderstanding what a "maid" is) he agrees, but with the cunning plan of winning her over for himself. It is, we're thinking, basically My Best Friend's Wedding but with a man playing Julia Roberts. The script was written by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont (who worryingly have both Surviving Christmas and The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas on their CV) from an original screenplay by up-and-comer Adam Sztykiel.
We assume that Dempsey's going to be wearing a fat suit, or large comedy glasses, or some sort of fright wig or something to explain why he's in this woman's friend zone, but there's no official word on that yet. Let's just hope that, in the dishy-TV-doctor-tries-to-get-back-to-cinema-leading-man-role stakes, this proves to be his Out of Sight rather than his One Fine Day.
Weiland, who's directing, most recently took care of Brit comedy Sixty Six, and previously worked on City Slickers II and Roseanna's Grave, as well as lots of Mr Bean and Blackadder: Back and Forth. The search is still on for a female lead for the film, sp producer Neal Moritz (xXx, 2 Fast 2 Furious) can expect to be mobbed by eager young starlets any day now.
