She's already appeared in one of the more successful comicbook-based movies this year as Deadpool 2's Domino, and Zazie Beetz isn't done with that world. The Atlanta actress is now in talks to co-star with Joaquin Phoenix in Joker.
Todd Phillips co-wrote (with Scott Silver) and is directing the new film, which is based on the DC Comics Crown Prince Of Crime, but exists outside the main DCEU. And far from being a big-budget supervillain film, it's planned as a dark character study, looking at how someone can become the grinning criminal lunatic who causes so much trouble for Batman and other heroes. While much of the story is still secret, The Hollywood Reporter has learned Beetz would play a single mother who catches Phoenix's eye.
It'll be a grittier film than most of the rest of the DCEU (which is saying something), with shooting scheduled to start in September and a 4 October 2019 release date for the States.
Beetz, whose career has really been taking off in the last couple of years, has recently worked on films including Steven Soderbergh's next, High Flying Bird and Noah Hawley's Pale Blue Dot.
