We were teased back in January with word that a sequel to 1988’s Midnight Run was “in development”, but now Universal is officially kicking the project up a notch by hiring a writer and locking down a solid deal for Robert De Niro to produce and star once more.
Tim Dowling, who worked on Role Models, is the man – at least on the first draft – charged with writing something that will match up to a truly admired giant in the comedy drama genre, which saw De Niro’s cop-turned bounty hunter Jack Walsh hunting down, then bickering with turncoat mob money manager Charles Grodin.
Grodin isn’t coming back for the sequel, so De Niro will be tracking down someone new.
It’ll take a while for this one to make it through the usual hoops, but if we’re truly honest, we’re not sure the original film truly needed a sequel, and especially not years afterwards. But maybe it’ll turn out to be a Toy Story 2 and not a Teen Wolf Too…
