Amid the flurry of news stories that arrived in the madness of San Diego Comic-Con this past weekend, one almost escaped our attention: the Aquaman solo movie finally has a writer confirmed, and his name is Will Beall (erstwhile of Gangster Squad writing duties).

Beall, as those paying attention may remember, was already hired to write a script for the forthcoming entry in DC’s ever-growing cinematic universe. Back in 2014, he was recruited by Warner Bros to submit an Aquaman draft – as was Kurt Johnstad and David Leslie Johnson. All three writers were hired to compete with one another, with the best script presumably winning out. A sort of screenwriter’s Hunger Games, then.

Now Beall is back in the picture, though according to THR, he will not get a story credit. His script will instead be based on an extensive treatment by the film’s director, James Wan (the man behind The Conjuring and Fast & Furious 7) ,and comic writer/DC Films co-head Geoff Johns, who have both spent some time hashing out an outline before proceeding.

Jason Momoa is slated to star as the mythical half-human, half-Atlantean superhero who primarily fights water-based crime. Momoa featured heavily in the surprise Comic-Con footage from the Justice League movie, which is currently filming with Zack Snyder at the helm.

Justice League will make it to cinemas first, arriving on November 17, 2017, while the Aquaman movie arrives on July 27, 2018. First two rows may get splashed.
