We might have had a big screen adaptation of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables just a few years ago, but that isn't stopping the BBC from going ahead with its own, non-musical version that will star the likes of David Oyelowo, Dominic West and Lily Collins.

West is playing former convict Jean Valjean, a man haunted by his past and struggling to make amends. All the while, he's hunted by driven lawman Inspector Javert (Oyelowo), who is after him for a parole violation. Along the way, Valjean helps the young Fantine (Collins).

The trio leads a cast that also includes Olivia Colman, Adeel Akhtar, Josh O'Connor, Ellie Bamber and Erin Kellyman. And the script is by the prolific Andrew Davies, a veteran of period dramas who most recently shepherded War And Peace to the Beeb's screen. The cameras will roll under the direction of Tom Shankland next month in Belgium and France.
