With the likes of X2, a credit on Watchmen and a load of projects in development, David Hayter has been an in-demand screenwriter for years. But now he’s finally getting to achieve a goal he’s harboured just as long – directing. He’ll kick off with teen horror tale Wolves.
The supernatural drama, which has a relatively low budget of $18 million is described by Hayter as “Twilight with a bit more bite to it, and without abstinence,” and strips out much of the regular werewolf mythology to focus on a metaphor for teen lads maturing into adulthood.
The film had been set up before, with production company Crystal Sky, but then the credit crunch happened and Hayter saw his dream disappear.
He’s also tried to direct other movies, including a take on Marvel’s Black Widow and, as part of its long gestation, was even down to take a shot at Watchmen. But for all his years of experience in the business, first-time directors tend to have to graduate from smaller films first. Hence Wolves’ lower budget and profile.
With E1 Entertainment on board (as part of a bigger deal for TV and movie development that has just been signed, Hayter hopes to start shooting in July. Ray Stevenson was attached to the earlier version – perhaps he can get him back on board?
