Real-life tragedies carry big emotional depths and often seem to become the subject of competing films as studios look to frame their own take on the story. With several films about the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013 already in development, Lionsgate is added another, hiring David Gordon Green to direct **Stronger{ =nofollow}.

John Pollono has adapted the script from survivor Jeff Bauman’s book, co-written with Bret Witter. Bauman was waiting for his girlfriend at the finish line of the race when two pressure cooker bombs exploded, killing three and injuring more than 260 others, including Bauman. He lost both his legs in the attack. The book chronicles his rebuilding his life through recovery and experiences being a key witness at the trial of surviving bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was sentenced to death in May after being found guilty on all charges.

Stronger will represent just the latest entry in the attempt to make a film about the incident, with Mark Wahlberg attached to star in** Patriot’s Day **for CBS Films and Fox looking to lock in both a cast and a director for Boston Strong.

Green’s next film due here is the Al Pacino-starring Manglehorn, which is out on August 7. He’ll follow that with political comedy drama Our Brand Is Crisis, which stars Sandra Bullock and Billy Bob Thornton.
