While he found success with Shazam! (and has been preparing to work on the sequel during some of his time in pandemic lockdown), director David F. Sandberg's first true love cinematically is horror. He's heading back in that direction for a potential new movie, agreeing to direct The Culling.

Stephen Herman, a music video editor who branched out into indie productions, wrote the script. The Culling finds a troubled priest confining himself to a remote cabin in the middle of the woods where he attempts to make a last stand against the demon that terrorized his family when he was a child. Definitely sounds like something Sandberg can bring to life.

Lionsgate has the rights to the film, and we'd assume the company will want it shooting once Sandberg has finished the superhero sequel, assuming that one goes ahead in the next year or so. Sandberg is also producing the film via the production company he formed with wife/creative partner Lotta Losten. The pair has also been busy during lockdown, crafting two shorts, Shadowed and Not Alone In Here, both of which are online now.
