Yes, we know we’re a little late to the party, but the first trailer for Date Night – the comedy that teams Steve Carell with Tina Fey – has gone up over at Apple. And it’s… interesting.

Mainly because there aren’t as many laughs as you’d expect, particularly from that pairing, but more action than you might have thought, as Carell and Fey’s going-through-the-motions marrieds get caught up in a case of mistaken identity while out on a date night, and end up being chased through a New York night by two professional killers.

So, inbetween rather rote gags about Carell’s mother and their sexless, safe, staid marriage, we get glimpses of car chases, shoot-outs and general derring-do that’s more reminiscent of Carell’s last big-screen outing, Get Smart. Nothing wrong with that, as long as the laughs are delivered in the long run.

But it’s early days yet, and there’s plenty of promise in the appearance of Mark Wahlberg as an abbed-up ex-client of Fey’s, and James Franco and Mila Kunis as the scruffy couple who are the killers’ real targets. Let’s try to forget that this is directed by comedy black hole, Shawn Levy, and keep our fingers crossed.
