The Grand National this past weekend might not have been a nail biting finish, but it appears the US box office result is making up for it. For while Date Night, the new comedy starring TV titans Steve Carell and Tiny Fey is technically in first place with $27.1 million on the estimates, Clash Of The Titans is breathing down its neck with $26.9 million.
The final tally could see Titans – which dropped 56% in its second weekend, less than many had predicted – inching out the comedy for first place. It will be Monday before the results are known, though while it’s a decent start for Date, it’s not exactly a big hit so far.
In third place we find DreamWorks’ How To Train Your Dragon, which held on well in its third weekend for $25.3 million, and means it now enjoys a total of $134 million – some way to go to be in profit, but it should be successful. Fourth was Tyler Perry’s Why Did I Get Married Too, down 62% with $11 million. Rounding out the top five was romantic drama The Last Song, which made $10 million.
The rest of the chart was made up of Alice In Wonderland (sixth), Hot Tub Time Machine (seventh), The Bounty Hunter (eighth), **Diary Of A Wimpy Kid **(ninth) and one new arrival, religious drama Letters To God, which took 10th place and $1.1 million.

**Update 12/04: **As some predicted, Titans did indeed slip past, grabbing a final total of $26.6 million to Date Night's $25.2 million. Looks like someone released the financial Kraken! Ahem.
